Thanks to America’s close history with Mexico, there are several forms of Tex-Mex and similar styles of cuisine that blend the best of both worlds. The chimichanga hails from Arizona and belongs to what’s called Arizona-Sonoran cuisine.
A chimichanga is essentially a burrito; the only difference is it’s deep-friend and served on top of lettuce and with cheese and a mild sauce.
It’s a Mexican-inspired staple in and around Tucson, with its origins dating back to the early 1900s. You don’t have to go all the way to Tucson for this staple dish, however. In fact, it’s super easy to make right at home!
