In the case of the Crazy Russian Hacker, he believes the scratches come from rubbing up against another car of a different color; the paint from that car then wiped off onto his, probably scratching away some of his paint in the process. This would have cost him a couple hundred dollar to paint over himself or to take to a garage, but instead, it only cost him a few bucks to pick up a bottle of WD-40!
