I wanted a quick and easy update for an old dated chair I found. Some white spray paint, acrylic craft paint, and textile medium made all the difference!
“Free” was the perfect price for this chair, but it was so ugly! After cleaning it off, and taking the seat base off it was time to spray paint!
The chair has great structure, it just needed a little tlc! Spray paint handles help a lot, and lots of light coats so you can avoid drips. I don’t mind cheap spray paint for my projects, but if you use good spray paint it takes fewer coats!
I used Ceramcoat Textile Medium, and Ceramcoat acrylic multi-surface paint. I explained the ratio of paint/medium and water in the full blog post in the link you will find below!
It was a little tricky to paint the textured fabric on the chair cushion. Smooth fabric would go a lot easier. It took two coats. I used 1/3 of the bottle of the textile medium, and 2 bottles of the acrylic craft paint.
The seat looks so much better! Having read before that painting fabric stiffens it, I was not expecting the outcome to be soft. And it wasn’t soft. The fabric feels stiff now, and it is a little bit scratchy. If I were looking to refinish a big comfy chair I planned to spend lots of cozy time in, this would not be the method I would use. However, for a sewing crafting chair, it was the perfect easy time saving method!
Not so dark and grungy looking anymore!
