Procedure
1. Pour a cup of ammonia into a garbage bag.
2. Place BBQ grills inside garbage bag and seal tight with string, rubber band or some sort of tie. Make sure it’s tied tight for two reasons: A. it’s the vapors from the ammonia that clean your grill and B. It’s better for the environment to not have ammonia leaking into lawn/soil.
3. Place your bag in the sun and let sit there until the following day. The heat from the sun will help speed up the process of the ammonia.
4. The following day take your grills out and rinse with water in a garage sink if you have one or any other sink as long as you open windows and it’s well ventilated.
Safety Precautions
When working with ammonia always use gloves and eye goggles. Make sure you are in a well ventilated space so the fumes don’t cause dizziness or other negative health defects. For disposal you can wash down sink with plenty of water. You may also check with your local poison control board for disposal options.
Don’t worry about getting the entire grill covered in ammonia, no need to waste the product! As long as the garbage bag is tightly closed, the fumes from the chemical will be enough to strip down the grill of all the grime and caked on food. That being said, make sure you adhere to those safety precautions above, because ammonia is an extremely strong and can be harmful if used incorrectly.
